Does Size Really Count?

Carats, The Measurement Of Diamond Size

Carats are the unit of measurement used when discussing diamonds, and are held, by common belief, to be the measurement of a diamond’s value.

Consider, the first instinct of most men when hunting for an engagement ring, is to find one sporting the biggest diamond he can afford. This mentality of “bigger is better”, seems to pervade many aspects of our lives, especially, it seems anything to do with romantic endeavours.

The question is, however: “Does size really count?”

Other factors Contributing to Diamond Value

Aside from carat there are 3 other “Cs” that determine the market value of a diamond. These are:

  • Colour
  • Clarity
  • Cut

Most experts will agree that no single quality is of more importance than any of the other three; it is the combination of these traits that truly makes a stone something to be marveled at. Thus it is the four Cs, not just the carat, that makes a diamond truly valuable.

Diamond Colour And Carat

Buying a 1 carat white gold diamond ring is an attractive option for wooing the love of your life. A 1 carat diamond, after all, is nothing to sneer at, it’s a respectable size and set in a stunning ring, it can be a true object of beauty.

In terms of pure beauty, however, even a smaller diamond, say a 0.5 carat stone, can outshine the larger rock if it’s an exotic colour. A small pink diamond, for instance, can easily be considered more beautiful than a larger stone of standard hue.

Carat Or Clarity?

No matter how big a diamond is, it will never be as beautiful as it has the potential to be if it’s appearance is marred by cracks and tiny imperfections, reducing it’s ability to reflect and refract light.

A diamond with too low a clarity rating becomes little more than a showcase of it’s own blemishes, and the larger it is, the more apparent these imperfections become.

The Diamond’s Cut

The cut of a diamond refers to the shape in which the diamond cutter formed the stone. This is an incredibly important quality in that the cut determines how the diamond reflects light, how it’s surface shimmers. In addition, the way the diamond is cut will determine how many natural imperfections are removed from the original stone.

So, Does Size Matter?

Size does matter, but only as much as each of the other qualities a diamond possesses. A large pink diamond, lacking any imperfections and cut by a master craftsman can be of absolutely unsurpassed beauty.

While many people are obsessed with the idea of giving their love a massive diamond to express their love, there is a lot more to consider than simply how many carats a diamond is. Put more thought into the purchase of a diamond than just how big it is.
