Wedding Rings
In one form or another, wedding rings have been in use for thousands of years. Originally, wedding rings for women were the only type of rings that were used. Several theories suggest that they originated as a sign of ownership, and that wedding rings were used as a symbol that a woman was “taken.”
This theory seems to stem from the use of iron wedding rings by the ancient Romans. However, the tradition of giving a ring dates back even further, to the Egyptians who gave woven or carved rings or bracelets as love gifts.
Mens wedding rings on the other hand, are a fairly recent fashion, and it was only early in the 20th Century that it became common for men to wear wedding rings as well.
Wedding Ring Designs
As with many other items of fashion, wedding rings have gone through a number of transformations over the years. From the woven reed of the Egyptians to the iron of the Romans, all the way to the gold wedding rings that first became popular in the early middle ages, the concept has remained, while the specifics have changed every now and then.
Although silver wedding rings were popular for a time, and even diamond wedding rings sometimes enjoy some popularity, (despite diamonds usually being used for engagement rings), a gold wedding ring has been a firm favourite for centuries now.
Although the most common wedding rings are still yellow gold, white gold wedding rings, and platinum wedding rings, have become very popular. Designer wedding rings, and wedding ring sets which include matching wedding rings for men and women are also becoming increasingly popular.
