Gold Rings – Classic Style

The traditional gold ring remains an all-time favourite when it comes to choosing a wedding ring for men and women. As you can read in one of our previous articles, the tradition of gold rings is a longstanding one, much more entrenched than the relatively recent practice of using gold diamond rings for wedding bands.

Plain gold rings have always been common for mens wedding rings, ever since men started to wear them regularly, in the 1930’s. Their simplicity, elegance and lack of ostentatious decoration made them seem somehow more suitable. And with the tradition of giving diamond engagement rings, it was fashionable to use only simple gold rings for the wedding ceremony, for both womens and mens bands. When combined with the gold engagement ring, the gold wedding ring would often create a stackable set which appeared to be a single ring.

Gold Wedding Rings

Originally descended from the iron rings used by Romans, and perhaps even the woven rings used as symbols of love in ancient Egypt, gold rings became a symbol of the marriage promise as precious metal became more commonplace. Eventually, yellow gold rings became so synonymous with marriage that it was considered bad luck to be married without one.

Today, many variations of the classic gold rings exist, as contemporary couples become more and more likely to assert their individual style when it comes to choosing the design of their wedding rings.

A sought after modern alternatives to the traditional yellow gold ring are white gold rings. White gold wedding rings, and white gold engagement rings, have become a popular fashion, and commonly denote an understated elegance without being too flashy.

Gold Engagement Rings

As with wedding rings, the engagement ring is still most commonly a yellow gold ring, that has, in the last 70 years or so, been traditionally paired with either a diamond alone, or a diamond in combination with some other types of stone, in a setting that depends on the type of ring. Stones may vary in size, shape and type, but in general, couples select engagement ring designs intended to showcase the gem.

In general, mens jewellery tends to be rather understated when you compare it to womens. As a result, mens gold rings, whether for the wedding or the engagement, tend to be simple band type rings, with perhaps a little engraving or knot-work by the manufacturer to enhance the design.

Choosing Your Gold Rings

With the huge variety of gold rings, for both weddings and engagements, that are available today, finding the ring to suit your tastes is becoming a relatively easy task. Even if you can’t find anything that appeals to you from a retail supplier, manufacturing jewellers can create gold rings to your own design.

The only criteria that really counts when it comes to choosing the right ring is your budget. And whatever it is, you’re sure to find something that not only fits it, but suits your taste and sense of style too.
